Is chiropractic care only for back and neck pain?

Several years ago, I had a patient who came in to get adjustments for her lower back pain.  At her 3rd visit, she informed me that she wouldn’t be coming in the following week because she was having foot surgery.  I was a bit surprised because she hadn’t mentioned any foot problems at her initial visit and exam.  I realized that I had dropped the ball because I was so focused on her primary complaint that I neglected to ask about any other complaints that she might have.  Conversely, she had no idea chiropractic adjustments could help anything but back and neck pain.

She explained that she had foot pain for years and no medical treatments or physical therapy helped.  So, she made an appointment for the following week with a podiatric surgeon to have surgery on both feet.  She said the good news was that he was only going to charge $900.00 total for the surgeries.  I then explained to her that I work on feet as well.  She said, “I didn’t know that chiropractors worked on feet.”  I said, “not only do I work on feet; I also do chiropractic adjustments on knees, elbows, shoulders, hands, hips, wrists and TMJ.  I asked her if I could see what I could do for her feet.  She said “okay” and I went to work.  After the foot adjustments, I had her walk around for a couple of minutes and she said that the pain in her feet were gone for the first time in years.  I said “great.”  “Just go to the front desk and pay the $900.00 and I’ll see you next week.  Since she knew I was joking; we both laughed and she made her chiropractic appointment for the following week.
