Does insurance cover your chiropractic services?

There was a time back in the 80s when insurance covered chiropractic quite well.  However, like many things in life that are too good to be true, insurance companies started dropping coverage, making the co-payments very high or greatly limiting the amount of adjustments you could receive within a year.

Back in the 90s, there was a new type of insurance coverage call managed care.  In the beginning, chiropractors were paid well for their services and it gave great access to chiropractic care for patients. But then the bottom dropped out and chiropractors were paid less and less and then paperwork became overwhelming.  Also, I had a colleague who lost his whole practice when the Manage Care company moved all his patients to another office.

To the patient, insurance seems like a great idea.  However, insurance coverage often drives prices up and with the high deductibles and co-payments, the patients aren’t really saving much money, if at all.  Also, insurance companies will often dictate what kind of care and how much care the patient will receive by only covering certain services.  Oftentimes, payments are flat out denied.

When you pay cash, you get the services you need and usually at an affordable rate.  I had a patient tell me that they saved over $200.00 in my office because my fees were lower than the cost of their chiropractic insurance, deductible and the co-payments.  In my office, patients get what they need and not what the insurance companies are willing to cover.
